Kimberly and I were assigned to General Hospital. Luke and Laura apparently have retired. The hospital has run out of money so imagine large tent after tent strung together with a small passageway between them, not to mention laundry being hung on the clothesline alongside the tents.
The morning we helped 2 women who had just had very severe strokes and no real use of their left sides. Kimberly even turned into a speech therapist helping her learn to swallow again. We were pleased to see the patients with amputations have been given appropriate exercises and hopefully will be given prostheses in the near future. We provided lots of canes and crutches for various folks and every time I brought one set another person wanted a set. I even had a pair stolen right from under me.
Kimberly changed a dressing on a guy with a bad infection (screaming pain) secondary to a torn achilles tendon and ankle fracture. Go Kimberly.

While Kimberly turned into a soap opera star playing an MD on TV in the ER, I worked Triage to get folks where they needed to be. I was amazed at how patient all the Haitian's were while they waited for hours to see us.
Kimberly will return to General Hospital tomorrow to attend to her patient with a Stroke to find a way to get her a much needed wheelchair. I will head to a new adventure.
The drive to and from our Hospital took over an hour and imagine driving through Slumdog Millionaire over and over again for the hour, coupled with the devastation from the earthquake. It is seriously so overwhelming that it is hard to imagine how Haiti will continue to move forward.

We all enjoyed our showers as it was very very hot and humid today. We showered tonight under the stars with cold trickling water in the dark and it really was quite refreshing!
The only scary moments surrounded driving through the streets with horns honking and cars/trucks/hummers/UN/US Army driving within centimeters of each other. We literally saw 3 MVAs that involved cars hitting pedestrians as they skidded by. Not to mention 3 stabbings all involving infidelity. I have to mention a sad boy with a tumor in his leg bigger than a
cantaloupe, as it was just so unbelievable. Kimberly also met a women with breast cancer so far gone the tumor burst-ed out of her skin. I refuse to complain about health care or health care reform in the USA today.I assure you that we are blessed beyond all of our imaginations.

I am so proud that you are able to contribute to helping ease some of the suffering there. Sending you my love,

The way you guys are "walking the talk" inspires us at home. Keep a journal close by, Kimmer. With your memory, you'll need it when you sit on the porch and "spin-yarns" about your time in Haiti! All of you are in our prayers!

I thought you weren't going to get split up!!
ReplyDeletePlease let us know where everyone is so that we are not worried about anyone. Where did Lisa end up?
Dolores (Lisa's mom)
Thanks for the details, as it really helps me get a better understanding of the situation. It is interesting that you gals are split up. Nancy and Bob are following daily as well. We are proud of your efforts, even though you may think they are small.
ReplyDeleteBlessings to all of you,
